Tempe Police Identify Man Killed in Fatal Shooting Incident
TEMPE, Ariz. — A Tempe police officer is in recovery after being shot in the leg during an incident that also resulted in the death of a suspect on Friday night, according to the Tempe Police Department.
The confrontation began around 6 p.m. at a Circle K store located at the intersection of Rural and Baseline. Officers recognized the suspect, 32-year-old Matthew Granado, who had an outstanding arrest warrant related to drug charges.
Granado fled the scene in his vehicle, driving into The Lakes neighborhood. When he exited the car, he fled on foot, prompting police to pursue him. During the chase, Granado opened fire, injuring one officer.
In response, officers returned fire, fatally wounding Granado. The wounded officer was hospitalised, underwent surgery, and is now recovering. Notably, police initially had no indication that the suspect was armed.
The East Valley Critical Incident Response Team is conducting an investigation into the shooting, with the Mesa Police Department serving as the lead agency.
