Tempe High School Honors Fallen Teacher with Emotional Moment of Silence After Tragic Wrong-Way Crash

TEMPE, Ariz. — A heartfelt tribute unfolded at Tempe High School as the community mourned the loss of math teacher Nasser Chidiac, who was killed in a tragic car accident involving a wrong-way driver on the Loop 202.
During the varsity basketball game on Thursday night, the announcer delivered a commemorative speech honoring Chidiac, followed by a moment of silence for the beloved educator. Players showed their respect by wearing black stripes on their jerseys.
Principal Brian Guliford described Chidiac, 50, as “one of the most professional, humble, knowledgeable teachers you’d ever want to meet.” Chidiac, who taught various levels of math at Tempe High for three years, is remembered for his kindness and engaging teaching style.
“Very well-liked,” Guliford added, reflecting on the deep connections Chidiac forged with his students. Notably referred to as a “gentle giant,” Chidiac’s vibrant spirit left a lasting impression on everyone at the school.
The devastating accident occurred when a 23-year-old driver from San Tan Valley collided with Chidiac’s vehicle near Power Road. The wrong-way driver remains hospitalized with serious injuries, and officials have not ruled out impairment as a potential factor in the crash.
Guliford recounted the day of the incident, noting the growing concern when Chidiac did not arrive for work. “Just about an hour into the work day, we were all very worried ultimately to hear the tragic news,” he said.
A dedicated professional, Chidiac taught during the day while driving for Uber at night to support his family in Lebanon. His family attended the tribute ceremony and described him as a kind, selfless man committed to helping others.
In a show of solidarity, students are currently supporting Chidiac’s family during this challenging time. “We’ll keep his spirit alive here at Tempe High from now and forever,” Guliford pledged.
To assist with funeral and memorial expenses, a GoFundMe page has been set up for Chidiac’s family. Tempe High School is also providing resources for students and staff grappling with the loss. A further tribute is planned for Friday night during the varsity soccer game.
