Girl who lured high school student to his death in 2018 convicted of murder

A young woman has been found guilty of murder in the 2018 killing of Lamar High School student, Delindsey Mack. Mack, 18, was targeted shortly after transferring to Lamar to escape gang threats at Yates High School.

According to investigators, Keona Mouton, then 16, played a pivotal role in orchestrating Mack’s murder. Prosecutors revealed that Mouton, with whom Mack had a crush, lured him outside where he was fatally shot seven times by a known gang member. Mouton, tried as an adult, now faces a potential life sentence.

Kendrick Johnson, the shooter, and Dave’on Thomas, the getaway driver, had been previously convicted and imprisoned. Law enforcement believes Mack was a member of a rival gang from the Third Ward.

Mack’s family lived in constant fear until the arrests. His grandmother, Dell Tatum, shared that “Poppy,” as he was affectionately called, was set to graduate just a month after his murder. Known for his football prowess at Yates, Mack’s father noted that his son had adopted a gang persona on social media out of fear, which tragically made him a target.

Mack’s father expressed sorrow over social media’s role in escalating the violence. “It’s heartbreaking that simple words and pictures could create such hatred,” he said, reflecting on how social interactions had transformed since his youth.

Pastor D.Z. Cofield described Delindsey as a non-confrontational individual. “He wasn’t a gangster. I called him Baby Huey. He wanted to be tough, but he wasn’t,” Cofield remarked.

After his conviction, prosecutors depicted Johnson as a ruthless killer. “Kendrick Johnson participated in at least seven murders. He aimed for notoriety in the gang world by killing as many as possible,” District Attorney Kim Ogg stated. Evidence from the trial showed Johnson even attended his victims’ funerals to seek out new targets.

Assistant District Attorney Sarah Seely emphasized Johnson’s menace. “Kendrick Johnson is the most dangerous gang member I’ve ever prosecuted. He killed for sport and deserved every year of his life sentence,” she concluded. Prosecutors emphasized his direct involvement in Mack’s murder, detailing how he stood over the bleeding victim and fired seven times.
