Teen Survives Devastating Crash Only to Be Struck by State Trooper on Highway

MILACA, Minn. — May typically symbolizes celebration for high school seniors. However, for Milaca High School’s Blayke Mostad, the month has turned into a battle for survival. The 18-year-old is currently in critical condition, unable to breathe independently after a harrowing incident on April 9.
Blayke, his younger brother Braxton, and a friend were struck by a wrong-way driver on Highway 10 in Clear Lake. Fortunately, they walked away from that collision unscathed. Yet moments later, their lives changed drastically when a state trooper, responding to the initial crash, collided with them as they stood outside their truck.
Braxton recounted, “I saw the cop arrive and thought everything would be okay. Suddenly, I realized he wasn’t slowing down.” His memory of the incident fades from that point. The Scherburne County Sheriff’s Office reported that Trooper Ryan Moeser, driving in the left lane, was unable to avoid a collision.
Braxton expressed confusion over the trooper’s inability to see them. “There was clear visibility. I don’t understand how he couldn’t have missed us,” he said.
The aftermath has been tragic for the Mostad family. Blayke has endured 15 surgeries due to severe injuries affecting his spine, brain, and legs. Braxton suffered a lacerated eye and a torn ACL.
Baylie, their sister, shared, “Our brother is the strongest kid we know. We have immense faith in his recovery.” Yet, their family’s anticipated milestones have been overshadowed by these events.
In the wake of the incident, Trooper Moeser has been placed on paid administrative leave. The Minnesota State Patrol stated, “Our thoughts are with all affected, and we recognize the profound impact this has on everyone involved.” The case has yet to move to the county attorney’s office for any potential criminal charge review.
For those wanting to support the Mostad family, a GoFundMe page has been established.
