Teen the only survivor in family after Texas street racing crash, police say

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — A devastating car crash linked to suspected street racing left four family members dead on Saturday evening, raising alarm over the dangers of reckless driving.

The accident occurred around 8:15 p.m. on South Belt Line Road near Kingston Drive. According to the Grand Prairie Police Department, a Chevrolet Traverse carrying five family members collided with a red Dodge Charger.

Three of the Traverse occupants died at the scene, while a fourth succumbed to injuries at a local hospital. The lone survivor, 17-year-old Anthony Rosales, remains in critical condition in intensive care.

Victims of the crash have been identified as Jessie Rosales, 42, his wife Lorena, 39, their daughter Stephanie, 13, and son Angel, 6. Family members expressed their grief, describing the tightly-knit unit and the heartbreaking chain of events leading to the tragedy.

Delia Rosales, Jessie’s sister, revealed, “We were always together, traveling together. Basically, we were all a united family.” She described the profound impact of the loss, noting, “They were at Six Flags, then they went to a Panda Express.”

Witnesses reported that the Dodge Charger, allegedly driven by 20-year-old Jaime Mesa, was speeding and racing against another vehicle, a Dodge Charger Daytona, prior to the collision. The Daytona fled the scene immediately afterward.

Yvette Acosta, who was nearby, recalled the harrowing moment, stating, “I just heard a real loud bang like an explosion… I saw the vehicles roll twice, two people get ejected, and the vehicle just caught on fire so fast.”

Mesa was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. He faces multiple charges, including racing on a highway causing death, manslaughter, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Police later apprehended 22-year-old Anthony Morales, the suspected driver of the fleeing Daytona. He faces similar charges.

As the Rosales family navigates this unimaginable loss, Delia expressed a painful truth: “They’re gone and they’re gone forever.” The community grapples with the implications of street racing, while the family holds onto memories cherished with each passing day.
