Swastikas spray-painted on mailboxes in Arizona neighborhood, sheriff investigating

CATALINA, Ariz. — The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating a troubling case of vandalism in Catalina. Swastikas and anti-Semitic messages were found spray-painted on mailboxes, disturbing many in the community.

The graffiti, which prominently featured the word “Jews” alongside the phrase “We Win,” was reported late last week. This act was initially brought to light by Marea Jenness, a resident whose mailbox was among those defaced.

Jenness stated that the vandalism occurred on Thursday night, expressing her outrage. “It really makes me sick to see some of the ugliest symbols in human history written on mailboxes,” she commented, emphasizing that these mailboxes represent federal property. She noted the shocking contrast between the hateful messages and the welcoming nature of their community.

Confirming the investigation, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department indicated potential links to at least two other recent acts of vandalism in the area. Local religious leader Rabbi Samuel Cohon expressed his disappointment but acknowledged a grim reality. “I wish it did come as a surprise,” he remarked. “It’s unfortunate that, even in 2024, people still don’t recognize Nazi symbols as mere expressions of hatred.”

In response to this alarming incident, News 4 Tucson has submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department to uncover details about the other related acts of anti-Semitism.

As the investigation unfolds, the Catalina community is reeling from these hateful expressions, prompting local leaders to advocate for increased awareness and efforts to combat discrimination.
