Supes, led by Maricopa’s Vitiello, promise $20M to expand SR 347

The Pinal County Board of Supervisors has made a significant commitment to the expansion of State Route 347, approving a $20 million budget allocation contingent upon securing additional state funds. This decision, made unanimously on March 19, highlights the county’s proactive approach to addressing infrastructural needs.

Supervisor Rich Vitiello (R-Maricopa), instrumental in advancing this project since assuming office in January, championed the measure. “There are roads that need to be built. This is one of them,” he stated following the board’s vote. “We need to widen it,” he emphasized.

The proposed project will add one lane in each direction along the 15-mile stretch from Maricopa to Interstate 10, with several enhancements planned. These include widening existing bridges over Santa Rosa Wash, Santa Cruz Wash, and the Gila River, as well as upgrading intersections and extending culverts at key points such as Casa Blanca Road and Borgia Road.

“The money comes from different funds,” noted Vitiello, who confirmed that the specifics of the $20 million contribution would be determined through ongoing discussions. Additional financing for the project is anticipated from a proposed half-cent sales tax in Maricopa, which has also received endorsements from local officials.

Mayor Nancy Smith and Councilmember AnnaMarie Knorr have expressed their support for this initiative, viewing Pinal County’s pledge as part of a broader strategy to ensure SR 347’s funding is included in the Arizona Department of Transportation’s Five-Year Plan. “The partnerships for 347 now include Pinal County, Maricopa County, state legislators, ADOT, and the City of Maricopa,” Smith remarked.

Knorr reinforced the notion that Pinal County’s endorsement underscores the project’s significance to the entire region. “Their support really signifies that this is a regional issue that needs to be addressed,” she asserted, highlighting the collective need for improved infrastructure.

Historically, the expansion of SR 347 has garnered attention, with previous attempts at funding facing challenges. Vitiello believes that current momentum, aided by strong relationships with local leaders, positions this initiative favorably. “This was a team effort,” he acknowledged.

However, skepticism remains among some officials. Councilmember Vincent Manfredi cautioned, “Unless I see it in the budget, it’s simply a promise right now.” Meanwhile, Knorr noted the broader support from communities recognizing the critical role of SR 347 in transportation, especially during detours.

Vitiello is set to present the proposed $20 million commitment at the Arizona State Transportation Board meeting in Yuma on Friday at 9 a.m. The meeting will be accessible online and via phone for those interested in following this developing story.
