Storm Fury Strikes Southern US: 4 Lives Lost in Tornado Chaos

Severe storms crossed the southern U.S. this weekend, leaving destruction in their wake. Strong winds, hail, and tornadoes were reported, claiming at least four lives and causing significant damage across multiple states.
The National Weather Service confirmed around 40 tornado sighting reports stretching from southeastern Texas to Alabama. Meteorologist Frank Pereira noted the unusual severity of this late-year weather system.
In the Houston area, surveys were underway to examine damage caused by at least five tornadoes that struck on Saturday. A 48-year-old woman tragically died in Brazoria County, found approximately 100 feet from her home. Authorities stated that other injuries in the area were non-critical, but around 40 homes sustained substantial damage.
North Carolina also reported casualties as a 70-year-old man died when a tree fell on his truck in Statesville. Highway Patrol Trooper DJ Maffucci deemed it a “freak accident,” emphasizing the randomness of the tragedy.
Mississippi faced the loss of two individuals, including an 18-year-old girl whose home was crushed by a tree. Additional injuries were reported, with emergency management officials confirming at least eight injuries statewide.
In Alabama, storm damage assessments commenced in Athens after powerful winds caused devastation. The storm tore roofs off buildings and tossed large HVAC units into the streets. Local spokesperson Holly Hollman expressed relief that the incident occurred late at night, potentially averting greater harm.
As of Sunday morning, power outages affected around 65,000 customers in Mississippi, along with thousands in Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas, following the storm’s rapid movement.
Transportation issues arose in Western North Carolina, where two major roads closed due to severe weather conditions. The storms also disrupted air travel, leading to over 200 flight delays and nearly 30 cancellations by midday at key airports, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
The impact of this unprecedented weather event will continue to unfold as communities begin recovery efforts and officials reassess the situation.
