Starved Dog Rescued from Abandonment at Valley Animal Shelter
PHOENIX — Chowder, a severely neglected dog, arrived at Better Chance Rescue in dire condition. The founder, Katelyn Beazley, described him as unconscious, starved, and soiled. His owners surrendered him, claiming they found him as a stray. However, a microchip revealed otherwise, confirming they were his original owners.
Beazley noted that Chowder’s growth had been stunted by neglect and abuse. At his intake, he had little to no muscle mass, making his bones visible. “There’s no muscle mass,” she emphasized, concerned for his well-being.
To support Chowder’s recovery, Better Chance Rescue has been sharing updates on their Facebook page, urging the community to contribute funds for his medical expenses. Chowder is currently hospitalized at the Veterinary Emergency Group, where treatment costs around $2,000 daily.
Despite his challenges, there are signs of progress. Chowder has started drinking water and eating, a breakthrough that Beazley celebrated as significant. “I am optimistic that he is going to make it,” she expressed, acknowledging the support from the community.
The latest updates reveal that Chowder has free fluid in his abdomen, likely due to malnutrition. A plasma transfusion has been approved to aid his recovery. To contribute financially, Beazley advised donors to use the QR code linked on the Better Chance Rescue page, warning against fraudulent collection attempts seen on platforms like Venmo and Zelle.
Chowder’s case highlights the vital role that community support can play in the recovery of abused animals. As he receives the necessary care, hope remains that he will soon regain his strength.
