St. Vincent de Paul Serves Christmas Meals to Thousands in Phoenix

PHOENIX — In a remarkable showcase of community spirit, St. Vincent de Paul volunteers served 7,000 Christmas meals to those in need on Monday. Their efforts included the preparation of 1,800 pounds of ham in a dedicated mission to bring joy during the holiday season.

The organization’s Phoenix Dining Room, located on W. Jackson St., provided a traditional feast that featured ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, fresh rolls, and an array of desserts, which were especially popular among guests.

Mary Chou-Thompson, Chief Marketing Officer of St. Vincent de Paul, emphasized the organization’s commitment to care. “Everyone who walks through that door, we want them to know they are cared for, they are loved,” she noted.

The event attracted notable figures, including Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Famer Kyle Lowry and other former NFL players, who volunteered their time as part of Lowry’s Champions for the Homeless initiative. Lowry spoke about the uplifting power of such gatherings. “This is a way to refresh your mind, your spirit, and your soul with what really matters,” he stated. He also highlighted the pressing homelessness crisis in Phoenix, pointing out that “half a million people in the last two years… have been temporarily if not permanently homeless.”

“That’s 10 percent of our population in Phoenix. We have got to do more,” Lowry urged, calling attention to the need for increased support for the community.

For many attendees, the Christmas meal extended beyond nourishment. Betsy Koeing, a former homeless individual, shared her journey toward stability. “I was staying out on the street a lot,” she reflected. “I’m blessed that I have a place to sleep and I’m not out on the street. I’m blessed that I have something good to eat.”

James Rose, another local facing health challenges, found solace in the gathering. “I have been having a couple of bad days,” he admitted. “But being here and seeing people happy makes my day.”

The celebration included live entertainment, flowers distributed at the entrance, and warm embraces, contributing to a heartfelt atmosphere. This communal effort exemplifies the spirit of giving that characterizes the holiday season.
