In a significant session held on March 4, 2025, members of the Arizona House of Representatives engaged in intense debates over nearly three dozen bills at the State Capitol. After contentious negotiations, an agreement on funding for State Route 347 and a crucial state budget emerged, alleviating concerns of a potential government shutdown on July 1.
Governor Katie Hobbs announced her intention to sign a bipartisan budget totaling $17.6 billion, following the veto of two earlier Republican proposals. This budget marks a milestone, allocating $53.7 million for crucial improvements to Maricopa’s lifeline highway.
“To know that this is the first time ever that the project has been funded fully is just thrilling and is very historic,” commented Mayor Nancy Smith. She emphasized the budget’s reflection of the community’s desire for greater safety and infrastructure improvement.
State Representative Teresa Martinez (R-Casa Grande) expressed optimism for quicker project initiation but cautioned that timelines depend on the Arizona Department of Transportation. “Just because the governor signs the budget doesn’t mean that the project automatically happens. We need to be on top of these agencies demanding deadlines,” she stated.
Her colleague, Rep. Chris Lopez (R-Casa Grande), praised the budget’s passage, highlighting its importance for not just the district but all of Arizona. Both legislators faced criticism for potential budget excesses yet defended their position, focusing on the needs of their constituents.
“How could I look the people of Maricopa in the eye knowing that I had voted against that money?” Martinez asked. She noted that although the budget wasn’t perfect, it included valuable provisions that demonstrate their commitment to the community.
In addition to the funding for SR 347, the legislators secured substantial financial support for local public safety and community initiatives. The budget designates $200,000 each for the Maricopa Police and Fire/Medical Departments, $50,000 for illegal dumping signs in Hidden Valley and Thunderbird Farms, $200,000 for the Sun Corridor Boys & Girls Clubs, and $100,000 for the Thunderbird Fire District.
