A 2012 Commemorative Edition Chevy Corvette caught fire this afternoon at the Maricopa Amtrak station, leaving its driver, identified as Don, on the phone with customer service. Despite the unfortunate event, Don remained surprisingly calm.

“It was time for a new ride,” he remarked, noting his need for something faster. The fire started while he was driving with the air conditioning on, and he detected smoke emanating from under the hood. He parked the vehicle and opened it to find flames already gaining momentum.

“It was too late,” he said, reflecting as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky, visible from the nearby John Wayne Parkway overpass. Fortunately, the Maricopa Fire Department had the situation under control shortly after 3:30 p.m. However, the damage was extensive, reducing the front end of the car to charred metal.

No injuries were reported, but the Corvette, valued at around $70,000, was declared a total loss. As he awaited a tow truck, Maricopa police assisted Don in managing the aftermath of the incident.

Despite the destruction of his custom brakes, Don found a silver lining: the “STILDON” license plate remained intact. “It’s okay,” the local car collector stated, “I’ve got others.”
