Southwest Airlines Set to Introduce Fees for Checked Bags: What You Need to Know

When will Southwest Airlines start charging for checked bags?

WASHINGTON — Southwest Airlines is set to implement significant changes next month, including new fare bundles. This announcement comes as the airline plans to discontinue its free checked bag program for many customers starting May 28, 2025.

Initially revealed in March, the adjustments include a shift in how fares are categorized. The new options will replace the existing Business Select, Anytime, and Wanna Get Away Plus fares with Choice Extra, Choice Preferred, and Choice. The enhanced fare structure aims to provide more tailored experiences for travelers.

Choice Extra, the highest-priced option, will offer two checked bags, early boarding access, and additional legroom. Customers opting for this fare will also enjoy complimentary internet access and a premium drink.

Although the exact charges for checked bags have not yet been disclosed, industry standards suggest fees could range from $25 to $50 per bag. Additionally, Southwest cardmembers will continue to receive one free checked bag for themselves and up to eight others on the same reservation.

For those traveling under Basic, Wanna Get Away, and Anytime fares, bag fees will be enforced as of the new policy date. However, passengers can still bring one carry-on and one personal item without incurring charges, as stated on the airline’s website.

This shift in policy coincides with Southwest’s announcement last week regarding a reduction in its flight schedule for the latter half of the year, attributing the decision to lower demand. This significant adjustment is reflective of broader trends among major U.S. airlines, many of which are reevaluating their financial forecasts for the year.
