Sours-Miller's double-double, Vital's 3-point shooting help Pima women fend off Scottsdale

The Pima Community College women’s basketball team, currently ranked No. 13, improved their record to 13-3 overall and 5-1 within the ACCAC after defeating Scottsdale Community College 67-53 on Saturday. This victory marks the Aztecs’ fourth consecutive win and is especially significant considering Scottsdale’s previous upset of Pima in last season’s Region I, Division II Semifinal.

From the outset, the Aztecs established control, initiating the game with a commanding 14-2 run. Scottsdale struggled early, missing their first nine shots. By the end of the first quarter, Pima led 14-7, and the halftime score extended to 35-26.

Despite a brief rally from the Artichokes, who cut the deficit to 41-32, the Aztecs responded decisively. Sophomore Mattanaya Vital sparked momentum with successive three-pointers, prompting a Scottsdale timeout. She later completed a hat trick of threes, boosting Pima’s advantage to 53-35 by the end of the third.

In the fourth quarter, the Aztecs dominated with a 14-3 run, reaching their largest lead of the game at 67-42. Scottsdale managed to score the last 11 points, but it wasn’t enough to alter the outcome.

Freshman Kiley Sours-Miller delivered a standout performance, registering a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Vital also contributed significantly, hitting four of seven attempts from beyond the arc for 15 points. Freshman Lucy Land added 15 points and five rebounds off the bench, solidifying the Aztecs’ offensive efforts.

Other notable contributions came from freshman Kennedi Niemann, who tallied nine points, six assists, and four rebounds, and freshman Melicia Nelson, who recorded seven points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

The Aztecs are set to continue their conference journey on Wednesday, facing off against Phoenix College at 5:30 p.m. Pima previously secured a victory against the Bears with a score of 74-65 on November 20.
