Sophia Rankin & The Sound Ignite Red Dirt Concert Series Launch
The Sedona Parks and Recreation Department is set to host the free Red Dirt Concert Series every Friday in September, spanning from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Posse Grounds Pavilion in Barbara Antonsen Memorial Park.
Special Events Coordinator Jason Vargo expressed enthusiasm about the lineup, featuring new acts this year. Attendees can expect performances from Sophia Rankin & The Sound, with opening act STEEN on September 6; Jon Margulies, accompanied by Jonathan Cady on September 13; Charlie McNeal alongside Austin B. Sweeney on September 20; and closing with The Originals and Rick Cucuzza on September 27.
Vargo highlighted the concert format, which includes two acts per show—a one-hour opener followed by a two-hour headliner—based on previous feedback. The series kicks off on September 6, showcasing Tucson-based alternative folk rock band Sophia Rankin & The Sound, led by vocalist Sophia Rankin. Her brother Connor Rankin adds rhythm on drums, with Ben Arthur Mortensen on bass and Diego Martinez on guitar.
“This is going to be a high-energy rock ’n’ roll show, and I’m incredibly excited,” Vargo stated. Sophia Rankin began her musical journey at the Tucson Folk Festival at 15 and formed her band in 2020. The band’s name reflects their mission to create memorable sounds that remain personal to them.
“We always aim to provide an experience for our audience,” Rankin said. She emphasized their lively stage presence and diverse setlists, blending rock anthems with ballads. Their approach aims to turn concerts into memorable events.
In addition to the concert series, Vargo confirmed the cancellation of the annual Oktoberfest organized by the Rotary Club of Sedona Red Rocks, citing decreased fundraising success and attendance as primary reasons. Future decisions regarding the event’s comeback in 2025 remain uncertain.
In light of the Oktoberfest cancellation, Sedona plans to launch a new event, Fest of Fall, following the Great Pumpkin Splash on October 19. This will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and promises family-friendly activities, delicious food, craft beers, and entertainment throughout the afternoon.
Other upcoming fall events will include Wagfest & Fair on September 14, the Great Pumpkin Splash on October 19, and the Sedona Food Truck Festival on November 9, ensuring a vibrant community gathering for residents and visitors alike.
