Sonoran Institute to host block party to clean up Santa Cruz River

This Saturday, October 12, the Sonoran Institute will host a morning block party aimed at cleaning the Santa Cruz River. This marks the kickoff of the nonprofit’s fall clean-up season, which will feature a DJ and various food trucks offering a range of Mexican cuisine, juices, aguas frescas, and vegan options.

Since 2020, volunteers have successfully removed over 1,800 bags of trash from the Tucson section of the Santa Cruz River. Despite these efforts, advocates emphasize that significant cleanup work remains. In April, the nonprofit American Rivers identified the Santa Cruz as the fourth most endangered river in the United States, primarily due to pollution levels.

A recent study conducted by the Sonoran Institute highlighted a concerning trend: nearly 50% of the debris found in the river consists of food packaging and cups, while another 10% involves single-use clothing and plastic bags. The organization aims to eliminate 2,000 pounds of trash from the riverbed during Saturday’s event, which will take place at 2301 N. Forbes Blvd., located west of Interstate 10, off Grant Road/Ironwood Hills Road, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toed shoes, apply sun protection, and bring a reusable water bottle. The event will provide gloves, bags, and trash-grabbers for volunteers. Additionally, Living Streets Alliance will offer bike valet services for those arriving by bicycle. An afterparty is planned at Dragoon Brewing Co., where volunteers can enjoy a $1 discount on their first pint.

Entry to the event is free, and individuals can register online to participate in this important community effort.
