SOCSD candidate Dave Price: District should draw staff, students

In a surprising announcement on Friday, August 23, Dave Price revealed his decision to withdraw from the race for the Sedona-Oak Creek School District Governing Board. The full story will be detailed in an upcoming issue of the Sedona Red Rock News.

At 64 years old, Price reflects on his four years in the Verde Valley, stating, “Sedona is the first place we’ve ever lived that wasn’t chosen by the Navy.” His professional background includes working as a fabrication welder and a construction worker before being appointed to the Naval Academy, where he served for over three decades as a pilot, engineer, and educator. Price has raised two sons alongside his wife Susan, navigating the complexities of 15 military relocations. He holds advanced degrees in aerospace engineering, national security affairs, and higher education.

When asked about his qualifications for the school board, Price expressed a deep commitment to education. He noted, “I serve on other nonprofit and local government boards and work as an admissions representative for the Naval Academy.” His vast experience in leadership and education has equipped him with insightful perspectives on the public education system, emphasizing its role in preparing students for successful futures. “We are all stakeholders in their future,” he added, asserting his dedication to enhancing educational opportunities.

On the topic of increasing enrollment in the Sedona-Oak Creek School District (SOCSD), Price stressed the importance of continuous improvement. “We must compete as the best option for parents,” he explained. He highlighted the need to enrich educational outcomes, attract quality teachers, and engage with the community to understand their needs. “We must proudly promote our schools and what makes them special,” he stated.

Addressing the needs of English language learners, Price advocated for expanding Spanish language curricula and providing additional resources for staff training. “English language learners are as important as native speakers,” he asserted, underlining the significance of enhancing preschool opportunities for all children, especially those learning English.

Price emphasized the importance of community outreach regarding the former Big Park Community School. “Open communication throughout the process is crucial,” he said, advocating for public participation in board meetings. He praised the civility and decency of discourse within the board and community while stressing that decisions should prioritize educational impacts.

When asked for his perspective on the ballot question regarding the sale of the former Big Park Community School, Price refrained from suggesting a specific vote. “I voted to place the issue on the ballot so residents can decide,” he clarified.

The election for the Sedona-Oak Creek School District Governing Board sees four candidates vying for three seats: incumbent President Randy Hawley, challenger Sam Blom, and incumbents April Payne and David Price.
