Soccer: Tucsonenses open 2025 with very familiar opponent

FC Tucson is gearing up for its 2025 season with a local debut against Selección Tucsón this Saturday at Kino North Stadium, starting at 7 PM. As the defending champions of the United Soccer League 2 Western Conference, the team is eager to showcase both returning and new talent on the field.

Notable players like Mateo Soto from Pima College, along with D’Andre Pickett and Paul Caliari, will provide experience to a squad that Coach Sebastian Pineda has carefully rebuilt. Pineda expressed a clear intention to maintain last year’s competitive edge. “I went very, very strong down the middle,” he stated, emphasizing the team’s enhanced athleticism and improved depth.

This friendly match serves as a critical tune-up ahead of the league’s first games, including a challenging matchup against Stars FC in Surprise. Last season’s rocky beginning, which saw the team secure only two wins in the first six matches, will inform Pineda’s approach. “Getting the group to click together, finding that chemistry as fast as possible is going to be the key,” he added.

On the opposing side, Selección Tucsón, led by local coach Ivan Jiménez, comprises a collection of regional players. Among them is the seasoned Donny Toia, who previously played professionally with Real Salt Lake. “I’m just along for the ride right now,” Toia commented on the new team dynamic, indicating the squad’s recent formation.

Toia’s return to competitive play comes after participating in the U.S. Open Cup with Des Moines Menace alongside other former pros. He anticipates an engaging match against FC Tucson, noting, “I’ve heard that it’s gotten a little more competitive over the years, and the guys don’t want to lose to this new team.” The excitement is palpable as players prepare for what promises to be a fun and spirited encounter on the pitch.
