2 killed in sniper ambush as Idaho firefighters come under siege from rifle fire

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — In a tragic turn of events, two firefighters lost their lives after being ambushed while battling a fire at Canfield Mountain on Sunday. The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office reported the initial response to the fire occurred around 1:30 p.m., followed by gunfire approximately thirty minutes later.

Sheriff Bob Norris stated that officials remain uncertain if there are additional casualties. “We don’t know how many suspects are up there, and we don’t know how many casualties there are,” he said during a press conference. There was a continuous barrage of gunfire, prompting urgent responses from law enforcement.

Governor Brad Little condemned the incident, calling it a “heinous direct assault” on firefighters. He urged Idahoans to pray for the victims and their families as the situation continues to unfold. “Multiple firefighters were attacked,” he emphasized, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The sheriff described the sniper as likely concealed in the rugged terrain, using a high-powered rifle. “I’m hoping that somebody has a clear shot and is able to neutralize,” Norris added, expressing concern over the lack of attempts at surrender from the shooter.

The Kootenai County Emergency Management Office issued warnings, advising people to steer clear of Canfield Mountain Trailhead and Nettleton Gulch Road, which is located about four miles north of downtown Coeur d’Alene.

The fire remains active, with Norris indicating that no resources could be deployed to extinguish it due to ongoing threats. “It’s going to keep burning,” he stated.

Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed that the FBI is providing technical teams and tactical support, emphasizing the scene’s ongoing danger. “It remains an active, and very dangerous scene,” he noted on social media.

The Idaho House Republican Leadership expressed their shock and horror over the firefighters’ deaths, stating they are praying for all those affected by the incident. Coeur d’Alene, home to approximately 55,000 residents, is situated near the Washington border and is known for its hiking and biking trails.

This situation continues to develop, and authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety of all involved.
