Skull of Anthem woman missing since 2022 found in New River

PHOENIX — The remains of JoAnn Dudek, an Anthem woman reported missing since November 2022, have been discovered in New River. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on November 6 that a skull found in the area belonged to Dudek.

Dudek was last seen on November 13, 2022, by her husband at their home. Within hours, she vanished without a trace. Dudek’s family had not heard from her since that night, prompting concern for her safety.

Erin Murtha, Dudek’s niece, shared her family’s reaction upon receiving the news. “It’s a mixed bag of emotions,” she stated, acknowledging both relief and sorrow. “We never expected her to be found alive after so much time.” Murtha learned of Dudek’s disappearance through her daughter, who lived with her parents.

According to Murtha, family members were informed that Dudek’s disappearance followed an argument between her and her husband. However, skepticism surrounded the circumstances, particularly since Dudek left behind her keys and phone. The family struggled with disbelief over the situation.

Despite the harrowing discovery, Murtha expressed a profound sense of relief. “The worst purgatory was living without answers,” she articulated. “While it’s heart-wrenching to learn of her death, finding her provides a better situation than remaining in uncertainty.”

However, this revelation does not bring complete closure. Murtha voiced concerns that something sinister transpired. “Our family believes she didn’t go for a walk and die naturally,” she emphasized. “We feel that something was done to her. This finding is only half of the closure we seek; we need accountability for those involved.”

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has indicated that its homicide unit is actively investigating Dudek’s case. Further updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
