Skattebo's do-it-all show is not enough to overcome Arizona State's 4th-down woes against Texas

ATLANTA — In a thrilling Peach Bowl showdown, Arizona State fell short against Texas, losing 39-31 in a dramatic double-overtime struggle. The Sun Devils showcased significant offensive prowess, particularly in rushing, but their inability to convert four pivotal fourth-down attempts ultimately proved costly.

Senior running back Cam Skattebo delivered an impressive performance, earning the game’s offensive MVP title. He amassed a total of 143 rushing yards on 30 carries, with two touchdowns, and also caught eight passes for 99 yards while tossing a 42-yard touchdown pass.

“We moved the ball pretty good, actually,” Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt commented. “We just need to have success in the red zone.” Despite their statistical advantages, including a 510-375 yard advantage over Texas and a dominant 214-54 lead in rushing, the Sun Devils couldn’t capitalize when it mattered most.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian acknowledged Skattebo’s impact, stating, “Skattebo was as advertised. He got stronger, it felt like.” Even while battling illness, Skattebo managed to disrupt Texas’ defense effectively.

Skattebo broke Arizona State’s single-season records with his performance this year, accruing an astounding 1,711 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns. His achievement surpassed previous records held by Woody Green and Eno Benjamin.

Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham reflected on the season, mentioning the challenges his team faced. His coaching efforts earned him a five-year contract extension announced just hours before the game. “I wanted this to be about the guys, the game and the players,” he explained.

The match saw Arizona State fighting through several moments of offensive stagnation. An early fourth-and-2 situation and multiple failed conversions in the second quarter highlighted their struggles. Despite these setbacks, they remained determined, exemplified by Leavitt’s leadership and commitment.

As the season closes, Skattebo summed up the experience, labeling it “undeniable” and a testament to the team’s relentless spirit. They fought through every challenge, reflecting their growth and resilience throughout an impressive season.
