Site Six could receive $1.6 million in improvements

A well-known fishing destination in Lake Havasu City may soon undergo significant changes after over 26 years of service. The Site Six fishing pier, frequented by countless anglers each year, is experiencing deterioration attributed to heavy usage, according to Mohave County Supervisor Buster Johnson.

In response, Johnson has proposed a $1.6 million replacement plan, funded through the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act. This initiative aims to revitalize the aging structure and enhance amenities for users.

“It is the perfect location for those who do not have a boat to enjoy fishing on Lake Havasu, and a great spot to take children and teach them how to fish,” Johnson stated in a proposal to the county’s governing board.

Johnson highlighted ongoing safety concerns, noting that maintaining the pier would be almost as costly as replacing it. He emphasized, “The fishing pier needs replacement.” He detailed mounting issues such as rusting railings, deteriorating structure supports, and failing floats.

A recent evaluation advised either renovation or complete replacement, with the latter option being only marginally more expensive.

The proposed improvements include the complete removal of the existing facility and the redevelopment of Site Six’s marina. Local resident Maggie Russell, a frequent user of the pier, supports the initiative. Having fished at the site for four years, she noted common issues such as inadequate lighting and underwater obstacles that upset fishing lines.

Russell remarked, “I go about once or twice per month, and it’s where we send customers when they ask where there’s a good place to fish in Havasu.” She believes that structural enhancements are necessary to maintain the site’s accessibility for future anglers.

Funding from the American Rescue Plan Act will cover all aspects of the project, including design, permits, and construction. The Mohave County Board of Supervisors is set to discuss the proposal at their upcoming meeting on August 19 in Kingman.
