Simone Biles Unveils Official Team Nickname After Stirring Excitement
The oldest gymnastics team the U.S. has ever sent to the Olympics has chosen a fitting nickname after their gold medal win.
WASHINGTON — Simone Biles has finally disclosed the official name for the U.S. gymnastics team heading to the Paris Olympics.
Following a stellar performance that yielded a gold medal in the team final, the American gymnastics icon unveiled the team’s official nickname.
“Okay on the real though, the official team name is golden girls (because oldest olympic team),” Biles, the most decorated U.S. Olympic gymnast, said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The name references the classic TV show “Golden Girls,” which featured Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty. The 1980s sitcom revolved around a group of older women living together in Florida.
The nickname is apt for the oldest women’s gymnastics team the U.S. has ever sent to the Olympics, coincidentally revealed on “Golden Girls Day,” celebrated on July 30.
Biles had other potential names in mind for the team. During a news conference on Tuesday, former Olympic teammate Aly Raisman inquired about the team’s nickname, prompting Biles to jokingly suggest “F.A.A.F.O” – “F*** around and find out.”
Biles’ brilliance was central to the dominant U.S. women’s team performance in the finals at the Bercy Arena on Tuesday, a competition marked by roaring enthusiasm from the crowd.
After clinching her eighth Olympic gold medal, Biles posted a celebratory photo of the team now dubbed “Golden Girls” with a caption aimed at addressing previous criticisms.
“Lack of talent, lazy, olympic champions ,” Biles wrote alongside the picture featuring teammates Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and Hezly Rivera.
Fans quickly noticed that Biles’ caption seemed to be a rebuttal to earlier criticisms from former teammate MyKayla Skinner. In a now-deleted video, Skinner had questioned the talent and work ethic of the current gymnastics team.
“Besides Simone, I feel like the talent and the depth just isn’t like what it used to be,” Skinner had remarked. “Just notice like, I mean, obviously a lot of girls don’t work as hard. The girls just don’t have the work ethic.”
Following backlash, Skinner apologized on Instagram and subsequently blocked Biles on the social media platform after Biles’ post.
Biles’ swift response underscores the undeniable prowess of the “Golden Girls” on the Olympic stage.
