Shakes for Seniors Recalled After Listeria Outbreak Claims 11 Lives

WASHINGTON — A significant recall has been initiated for cartons of frozen shakes linked to a listeria outbreak, impacting nursing homes and other institutions across the country. The affected products, sold under the brands Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial, were distributed to institutional customers such as hospitals and long-term care facilities, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Reports indicate that listeria cases associated with these shakes have been traced back to 2018. However, the source remained unidentified until now. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed that 38 individuals have contracted listeria, with 11 recorded deaths connected to the outbreak. The FDA continues its investigation into the matter.
Confirmed illnesses have been reported in various states, including Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia.
