Veterans Day Parade marches down Porter in seventh year

Maricopa celebrated its annual Veterans Day Parade on November 9, 2024, under the brightening Arizona autumn sun. The event, which started off with a chill in the air, quickly warmed up as crowds gathered in large numbers, showing their support for local veterans.

Participants included members of the American Legion, the Air Force JROTC from Maricopa High School, and marching bands from Desert Sunrise and Maricopa High Schools. Additionally, Maricopa Little League, students from Heritage Academy, and local Boy and Girl Scouts contributed to the vibrant display of community pride.

Although the parade was not officially city-sponsored, Mayor Nancy Smith and other members of the City Council attended to show their appreciation. City government spokesperson Monica Williams described the event as a resounding success that fosters community spirit.

Mayor Smith and Vice Mayor Amber Liermann made a memorable entrance in quirky vehicles from Hidden Valley’s dwarf car museum, while Councilmember Bob Marsh joined the festivities in a Smart Car, much to the delight of onlookers.

Now in its seventh year, the parade was initiated in 2017 by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 133 along with the Tortosa Homeowners Association, Leading Edge Academy, and the City of Maricopa. At its inception, the goal was to promote patriotism and foster education about veterans among the youth.
