Serena Williams makes a cameo in Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl halftime show

NEW ORLEANS — Tennis icon Serena Williams made a surprise appearance during Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime performance, igniting excitement among fans and dipping into the ongoing feud between Lamar and rapper Drake.

Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, surprised the audience during Lamar’s rendition of “Not Like Us.” Her performance was notable for her Crip Walk, a dance that previously sparked controversy when she executed it at Wimbledon in 2012.

Following the performance, Williams took to Instagram to express her thrill, exclaiming, “Let’s go Super Bowl halftime??! I died a little!” In a jovial backstage moment, she acknowledged the difference in her performance style, humorously noting, “Man, I did not Crip Walk like that in Wimbledon. Ooo! I would’ve been fined!”

The track “Not Like Us” serves as a Grammy-winning diss aimed squarely at Drake, critiquing his authenticity and romantic history. Williams’ cameo is perceived as an extension of this rivalry, given her past connection to the Canadian rapper, which lasted from 2011 to 2015. Their history included Drake being a familiar face at her matches, and he even referenced her in his 2013 song “Worst Behavior.”

Now married to Alexis Ohanian, Williams previously made light of their relationship during the 2024 ESPYs, showcasing her playful attitude towards the ongoing dynamic. Lamar’s halftime show also featured appearances from other entertainment luminaries, such as DJ Mustard, Samuel L. Jackson, and SZA.
