Seniors Shine as They Bring Their Tennis Talents to the U.K. from the U.S.
In a spirited display of camaraderie, eight residents from the Phoenix area recently embarked on a tennis tour in England, embracing both the physical and social benefits of the sport. Among them was 78-year-old Dale Ehrbright from Province, who joined his former doubles partner Leo Lapane and five other tennis enthusiasts from various Valley communities.
The group’s adventure saw them enjoying their time in Woking, England, accompanied by five wives and girlfriends, who joined in on side trips to iconic destinations like London and Paris. Their journey was sparked by a chance encounter when Lapane, 81, provided tennis tips to an Englishman visiting family in Maricopa. This newfound friendship led to an invitation for Lapane and friends to participate in tennis matches at the Englishman’s local club.
Planning quickly took shape, and the tour blended club matches with participation in an International Tennis Federation tournament. Although Ehrbright was sidelined after injuring a calf muscle shortly before departure, he remained an integral part of the group’s experience. His limitations affected his singles game, but Lapane advanced to the finals in his bracket, ultimately facing the world’s No. 10 player.
Ehrbright reflected on his lifelong relationship with tennis and cherished memories from his past. He recalled playing in a Maryland park when the tragic news of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination broke in 1963. Despite a slow start in high school sports, he found success later, excelling in tennis and setting state records during his senior year.
Later, as a recreational facilities manager in the U.S. Air Force, Ehrbright resumed playing competitively. Throughout his career with Chevron, he continued to hone his skills, competing successfully and earning regional rankings. After moving to Maricopa in 2005, he connected with Lapane through local tennis matches and tournaments, where the two eventually reached a national ranking of No. 13 in their age group.
Ehrbright’s love for tennis is matched by his diverse interests, which include flying, skiing, and even constructing furniture. He has contributed to the sport by coaching others while sharing valuable insights on doubles play. He emphasized that consistent teamwork can win games, regardless of individual power.
Lapane, recognized as a top player and ambassador for tennis in Pinal County, has enjoyed considerable success himself, having previously spent 15 years in the tennis business. His return to competitive play brought him new achievements, including the title of Southwest Player of the Year as awarded by the U.S. Tennis Association. Lapane continues to compete in tournaments, proudly representing Arizona on a national stage.
Both players agree that tennis is more than just a game; it enhances their quality of life. For these tennis enthusiasts, the court remains a vital part of their daily routine, making their ongoing adventures not just about competition, but also about lasting friendships and personal fulfillment.
