Senior Day Trips Make a Vibrant Comeback

Maricopa’s senior residents can look forward to the return of monthly field trips, a program that was discontinued nearly two years ago. A coalition of local seniors has partnered with Ride347 to revive the day trips, slated to commence next month.
Harriet Phelps, a Hidden Valley resident and committee member, expressed her disappointment over the program’s previous halt. “I attended those trips; they were so enjoyable and affordable,” she noted, reflecting on the excursions that previously took seniors to attractions like Sabino Canyon and the Desert Botanical Garden.
These outings not only provided a chance to explore but also served as a vital social outlet for many seniors. “Many of my friends don’t drive at night or at all anymore. This is a wonderful opportunity for them to bond and participate in activities,” Phelps added.
The inaugural trip is scheduled for Wednesday, September 18, to the Cheesecake Factory located at Chandler Fashion Square. Attendees will be picked up from Copper Sky Recreation Complex at 4 p.m. They can enjoy an early dinner and have time to shop until 8 p.m.
Councilmember Bob Marsh, who is also part of the organizing committee, expressed enthusiasm about bringing the program back. He stated, “I’ve been hearing requests for a return of the senior day trips. Seniors truly value the opportunity to explore our state’s attractions and natural beauty.”
While the committee is brainstorming potential future destinations, Marsh welcomes input from the community. “I would love to compile a top ten list of favorite spots from residents,” he said.
Registration is mandatory, limited to seniors aged 62 and older. Participants must make a non-refundable payment of $15 for the shuttle, with dinner costs excluded. Further details about upcoming trips can be accessed through the Maricopa Senior Living website.
