Sedona’s 5th Annual WagFest: A Celebration of Canine Companionship
The city of Sedona is set to host its fifth annual WagFest & Fair on Saturday, September 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Posse Grounds Pavilion, located at 525 Posse Ground Road.
This free community event promises an array of dog-themed activities, including a costume contest at 11:30 a.m. and a lively round of doggy musical chairs. According to the city’s press release, attendees can expect additional activities such as a free raffle, gift bags for the first 100 dog owners, special treats, pet portraits, and several canine-related vendors and exhibitors.
Last year’s event attracted around 300 participants, and staff anticipate a similar turnout this year. “The opportunity for dog owners and lovers to come out and celebrate their pets is something that is really appreciated,” said Parks and Recreation Special Events Coordinator Jason Vargo. “People love this thing.”
The activities, including dog mocktails, will be offered at no cost. However, dog treats will be for sale, along with other items from local vendors. This year, the traditional dog talent show has been replaced by a pup parade at 9:30 a.m. and the costume contest at 11:30 a.m.
To enhance the atmosphere, Vargo mentioned a specially curated dog-inspired playlist featuring classic hits such as ‘Puppy Love’ and some deeper cuts like ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’ by Iggy Pop and ‘Diamond Dogs’ by David Bowie.
One exciting feature at WagFest will be the game of “musical sits,” resembling musical chairs. As music plays, dogs and their owners will roam around, and when the music stops, the dogs must sit. The last dog to sit will be eliminated until a winner emerges.
Additionally, several dog trainers and rescue organizations, including the Sedona Humane Society, will conduct 15 to 20 informative presentations throughout the day. Participants are reminded that dogs must be up to date on vaccinations, remain on leashes, and that owners are responsible for cleaning up after them.
