The Sedona Police Department is set to host its annual Community Outreach Event on October 5, from 3 to 5 p.m. This gathering will take place at the Sedona Posse Grounds Hub, located in Posse Grounds Park.

Organized by the Sedona Police Volunteers, the event promises a range of activities, including face painting and a selection of food options such as hotdogs, hamburgers, and chips. Attendees can also look forward to demonstrations featuring SPD’s K-9 and drone units, as well as participation from the Coconino and Yavapai County Sheriff’s Offices and the Sedona Fire District.

“It bridges the gap between the community and first responders,” said SPD Lt. Raquel Oliver. “We can see how we can partner together for things that we need in the community.” The event is designed to foster interaction and collaboration between local residents and law enforcement.

The schedule for the event includes:
3 p.m.: Caricatures by Dan
3:15 p.m.: Drone demonstration
3:35 p.m.: K-9 demonstration
4 p.m.: Drone demonstration
4:20 p.m.: K-9 demonstration.

At the event, SPD Detective Justin White will conduct short demonstrations showcasing the department’s drone capabilities. “Our drone program is in its early stages,” White stated. “We primarily use it for search and rescues. I’ve assisted National Parks with locating lost individuals and searching for potential suspects.”

The department began with two drones, and thanks to a recent donation from the Chandler Police Department, five additional drones will enhance their operations. Plans are underway to train four to five more SPD officers on drone operation.

SPD K-9 Officer Catherine Beers, along with her K-9 partner Sam, will also lead public demonstrations. “It requires a lot of work as we train every day,” Beers explained. “Sam is useful not only in Sedona but also in neighboring agencies. Working with a non-apprehension dog allows me to engage in various community events.”

Participants will have opportunities to engage with detectives, including activities featuring impairment goggles that simulate the effects of alcohol consumption on coordination. “It illustrates how even a small amount can significantly impair your ability to walk,” Oliver noted.

For more information about the event, interested individuals can contact Lt. Raquel Oliver at (928) 203-5008.

It’s important to note that while the Verde Valley Fire District had plans for its first Regional Fire Prevention Day in Cottonwood on the same day, the event was canceled following the off-duty death of firefighter Shane Gage on September 27.
