Sedona-Oak Creek School District wants you to coach

The Sedona-Oak Creek School District is actively seeking nine new coaching staff members to enhance its athletic programs.

As of June 6, the district is looking to fill multiple roles, including an assistant track and field coach, head tennis coach, head track and field coach, head varsity boys’ basketball coach, head varsity girls’ soccer coach, head varsity softball coach, head varsity volleyball coach, junior varsity volleyball coach, and middle school girls’ basketball coach.

Peter Brock, Athletic Director at Sedona Red Rock High School (SRRHS), emphasized the enthusiasm of the young athletes. “Our kids are eager to play and learn new sports,” he noted. While there may be initial challenges as students adapt, Brock believes they are coachable and ready for growth. “Finding the right coach is crucial for our success,” he added.

Compensation for varsity head coaches ranges from $3,528 to $4,189 per year, while assistant, junior varsity, and middle school coaches can expect payment of $2,205.

Superintendent Tom Swaninger, Ph.D., mentioned the possibility of hiring new staff for currently occupied positions, although details remain unclear. “We may feel we can improve those positions by reopening them for interviews,” he explained.

Coaches are expected to dedicate around 10 hours each week, not counting game and travel time. High school practices typically occur for two hours daily from Monday to Friday, with optional Saturday sessions. Middle school teams generally practice Monday through Thursday, with practices on Fridays deemed important early in the season.

Looking ahead, Swaninger noted that weekly meetings will be held with Brock and the coaching staff to discuss ongoing challenges. “Coaching allows individuals to give back to the community,” he stated. Many community members possess valuable experiences, and mentoring youth is a rewarding endeavor.
