Sedona-Oak Creek School District Celebrates Star Athletes at Spring Honors Banquet

The Sedona-Oak Creek School District hosted its Spring Sports Awards Banquet on May 13, where it was announced that Peter Brock will assume the role of athletic director.
Adalynn Moore received the award for softball’s most valuable player, while Oliver Paydar took home the MVP title for golf. The ceremony highlighted individual achievements across various sports.
In baseball, senior Nicholas McAtee showcased his skills as a catcher during a challenging season against Camp Verde. Freshman Emily Calogero was named the most valuable player for the tennis team.
Softball
Co-Head Coach John Parks reflected on the season, noting the increased competition within a nine-team region. The Scorpions finished with a 4-12 overall record, clinching fifth place with a 4-8 regional record, including two wins by forfeit.
Second baseman Lorena Flores Juarz earned first-team all-region honors, while Adalynn Moore secured a spot on the second team. Parks praised Moore for her dedication both on the mound and at the plate, saying her performance was pivotal throughout the season.
Giselle Kalibri Wolfe was recognized as the Most Improved Player, advancing from the bench to become the leadoff hitter due to her exceptional hitting skills. Victoria Arenas received the Sportsmanship Award, noted for her positive attitude and commitment to the team.
Tennis
Under Head Coach Andrew Ellis, the tennis team wrapped up its season with a commanding 9-0 victory against Kingman. The team managed a 3-6 record, placing fourth in their section.
Calogero, who transferred from Florida, expressed her surprise in receiving the MVP award, emphasizing her goal to uphold high performance in future seasons. Angi Yin was recognized as the Most Improved Player for her significant progress throughout the season, while Ashley Calogero won the Sportsmanship Award.
Baseball
The Scorpions experienced a tough season, finishing winless at 0-15. Coach Jim Filbin emphasized the learning opportunities that come with setbacks in the game. Despite the lack of wins, Filbin praised the team for their resilience and growth.
McAtee was named the team’s most valuable player, commended for his leadership and hard work. Gavin Anderson earned the Most Improved Player award, showing remarkable advancement since his introduction to baseball. Erik Guerra Vasquez received the Sportsmanship Award for his positivity and dedication.
Golf
Coach Joseph Hazlitt praised his six-player golf team for their efforts throughout the season. Oliver Paydar shone as the Most Valuable Player, while Matisse Boistel was named Most Improved and Carter Pedersen received the Sportsmanship Award. Hazlitt highlighted Paydar’s near-par performances, despite his plans to pursue other interests in college.
Closing the event, Isom thanked the athletic community for their support. He announced plans to revive the football program, inviting community members to engage with the upcoming games and encourage prospective players to join spring practices.
