Sedona-Oak Creek School District gives end-of-season basketball awards

Sedona Red Rock High School recently concluded its basketball season with an awards ceremony for its varsity, junior varsity, and middle school teams held on February 13. Head Coach Becca Serenity spearheaded the girls’ team, finishing the season with a record of 2-14, including a 2-6 mark in regional play.

Meanwhile, the boys’ team, coached by Pedro Ortega Sr., recorded a 5-14 overall, with a 1-8 record in their region. Despite the challenges, Coach Serenity expressed pride in her team’s progress and commitment. “We faced some issues early on, but as the season progressed, the girls embraced our program’s core values both on and off the court,” she said.

Serenity is set to return next season, aiming to continue fostering a positive mindset among players. “Winning isn’t everything, but the leadership and character developed this season are invaluable,” she noted, reflecting on team dynamics and player growth.

Maria Saldana was awarded the title of most valuable player, while Karina Diaz Rodriguez earned the sportsmanship award. Milana Ovcharenko was recognized as the most improved player, highlighting the diverse accomplishments within the team.

Reflecting on her season, Saldana shared, “I improved a lot in my sportsmanship and mindset.” She described a challenging loss against Joseph City High School but highlighted her enjoyment during the final game against Madison Highland, where the team secured one of its two wins.

“Working on my shooting is my priority for next season,” Saldana added. Coach Serenity praised her determination and positive attitude, stating, “In those last three games, she showed a winner mindset and a belief in herself.”

Rodriguez, who received the sportsmanship award and the “Culture Player of the Week” accolade three times, was commended by Serenity for her consistent encouragement and high GPA, demonstrating her commitment on and off the court.

Ovcharenko, a Ukrainian exchange student, made remarkable progress in her first basketball season, culminating in her receiving the most improved player award. Coach Serenity noted her dedication in practice and cited a standout moment where Ovcharenko successfully executed a complex post move by the season’s end.

Victoria Lindsey, assistant varsity coach and head coach for the junior varsity team, concluded her tenure after four years with the program. She emphasized the importance of instilling purpose in the players they trained, equipping them with valuable life lessons alongside athletic skills.

Coach Ortega, unable to attend the ceremony, shared a heartfelt message, praising the team’s work ethic and highlighting memorable moments from the season, including standout performances from his players. Ben Metzger was named the boys’ most valuable player, with Steel Sturgeon recognized as most improved, and Nicholas Herman receiving the sportsmanship award.
