Sedona Heritage Museum offers free microfilm scanning

The Sedona Heritage Museum (SHM) has enhanced its ability to preserve local history by acquiring a ScanPro 2500 microfilm and microfiche scanner. This new technology allows residents to view microfilmed documents on computers and transfer the information to a flash drive at no cost.

“We are immensely grateful for our donors’ support in our annual campaign,” said SHM Executive Director Nate Meyers. “This scanner will enable us to digitize microfilm and microfiche, including archives from the Red Rock News, expanding our offerings through the Arizona Memory Project.”

The scanner purchase was part of a broader $30,000 fundraising initiative. This campaign also enabled the museum to launch the Agents of Discovery smartphone app in March, enhancing visitor engagement by allowing them to complete tasks and earn rewards during their tours.

Meyers noted that the funds will sustain multimedia programs for the next five years and that the scanner will recoup its costs within that time frame, eliminating the need to outsource scanning services to Maryland.

“We’re excited to share this resource with other museums and community members,” Meyers added. “If anyone has microfiche or film they want to access, we’re here to help. We’ve had veterans reach out for access to their service records stored on microfiche, and now, they can retrieve them.”

Residents needing to view microfilm can reach the museum at (928) 282-7038 or submit a research request via sedonamuseum.org. Additionally, those who wish to volunteer should contact Julie Holst, the volunteer coordinator.
