Sedona burglary suspect Adam Sheafe linked to New River homicide of Pastor Bill Schonemann

The Sedona Police Department, in collaboration with various law enforcement agencies, arrested 49-year-old Adam Christopher Sheafe on April 30 near Gambel Lane in the Chapel area. The arrest followed a multi-hour manhunt.

Sheafe is now a suspect in the murder of 76-year-old Pastor William “Bill” Schonemann. Schonemann was found dead in his home on Calvary Road in New River on April 28. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) reported that the Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide on May 1, indicating Schonemann was likely killed the day before.

Prior to Sheafe’s arrest, MCSO had established a connection between him and the homicide case. The agency, along with the FBI, is examining possible links to other criminal activities.

Sheafe was initially detained in Sedona after allegedly burglarizing two homes in the area. MCSO revealed on June 6 that they identified Sheafe as a suspect in the murder investigation. The agency is seeking public assistance for further information related to the case. Individuals can contact the tip line at (602) 876-TIPS and remain anonymous.

“We anticipate more details will be released as the investigation progresses,” MCSO stated. “Cooperation with federal and state law enforcement remains ongoing.” The agency noted that releasing additional information might compromise their investigative efforts.

Pastor Bill Schonemann, a Vietnam veteran and co-founder of the New River Bible Chapel, was highly regarded in his community. Known as “Pastor Bill,” he was passionate about cars and planes, often attending shows and community events. His wife, Kathy, passed away in 2022.

During a press conference on June 12, MCSO formally connected Sheafe to Schonemann’s murder, describing the case as both tragic and bizarre. While the MCSO indicated the murder had a religious motive, they withheld specific details. Sheafe has yet to be indicted in Maricopa County and remains in the Coconino County Detention Center.

The investigation into Sheafe’s activities began on April 29 when he was reported for a burglary in progress. A homeowner spotted him through security cameras, prompting a police response. Witnesses described the suspect as a white man in a cowboy hat and distinctive clothing, carrying bolt cutters and driving a red four-door truck.

Officers pursued Sheafe as he drove recklessly through the area, leading to a collision with another vehicle. When he abandoned his truck and fled into the wilderness, police set a perimeter. They eventually located him on April 30, leading to a chase through challenging terrain. After a lengthy search, he was apprehended by officers with the help of a drone.

Sheafe now faces multiple charges, including burglary, unlawful flight from law enforcement, and multiple counts of theft and assault. He was arraigned on May 1 and remains in custody with a bond set at $150,000.

The Sedona Police Department credited the community for their vigilance and assistance, expressing gratitude for the swift actions of residents that facilitated the investigation. “This case illustrates the significant impact citizens can have on community safety,” said Patrol Commander Christopher Dowell.

Sheafe has a criminal history, including prior convictions for assault and fraud. He previously served time for federal bank fraud and was released early in February 2023. In attempting to change his name in California earlier this year, his request was denied.
