Second B.K. on the backburner: ‘we are holding for now’

Plans for a new Burger King location in Maricopa continue to progress, albeit at a slower pace. The proposed site, situated at 41980 W. Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway, remains in the pipeline, but specifics regarding its construction timeline are still undetermined.

Recently, a landscape architect from Weaver Consultant Group sought information from city officials regarding necessary traffic impact analyses and drainage plans essential for the project. Despite these inquiries, Lucas Barnett, Operating Partner at Barnett Management Company, confirmed that construction plans are not yet in place.

“We are holding for now on that Burger King project,” Barnett said, reflecting the stagnation that has persisted since the last update over a year ago. In August 2023, he had noted ongoing delays but expressed optimism about eventually moving forward.

City spokesperson Monica Williams did not provide comments when approached for updates. The upcoming Burger King is expected to be positioned between Fast & Friendly Express Car Wash and Maricopa Kids’ Dentists & Orthodontics, adding to the local dining options managed by Barnett Management, which also recently opened Taco Bell and Slim Chickens in the vicinity.

Originally announced in 2021, the development of Maricopa’s second Burger King has faced approximately two years of delays, attributed primarily to rising construction costs and labor shortages. In previous communications, franchise owner Tom Barnett indicated that while they have secured a location for the restaurant, a groundbreaking date remains uncertain.
