'I could hear people screaming': 2 people shot in 'targeted attack' at Tempe park, suspect arrested

Tempe police are investigating a shooting that injured three individuals at Mitchell Park on February 12. Authorities reported that a suspect approached a group of homeless individuals and opened fire, resulting in two gunshot wounds and one graze injury.

Trenton Hodges, a nearby resident, described the chaos: “It was scary.” He recounted hearing about nine shots while at home, along with the sounds of people screaming. Neighbors noted that several individuals reside at the park, including a man known as Chicago Taps, who has lived there for four years. “We’re still in shock,” Taps stated following the incident.

The suspect has been identified as 37-year-old Aaron Sussex. Tempe police revealed that several victims were acquainted with Sussex, suggesting the shooting was a targeted act. He was located in Phoenix and taken into custody shortly after the incident. The investigation continues as law enforcement works to uncover more details.
