Miracle on Mt. Hood: Scottsdale man survives 700-foot fall

PHOENIX — Chris Zwierzynski, a 55-year-old man from Scottsdale, is currently on the road to recovery after a harrowing fall from Mt. Hood in Oregon this summer.

Zwierzynski, who aims to conquer the highest peaks in each state, experienced a life-threatening incident while climbing on July 6. He fell approximately 700 feet and required urgent airlift rescue by the Oregon National Guard.

“Doctors and my friends all call it a miracle that I survived,” said Zwierzynski, reflecting on the severity of his injuries. “Maybe I am.” His near-fatal experience has inspired him to share his story to provide hope to others.

Laurie Zwierzynski, his wife, recalls the moment she received the devastating news while visiting a friend in Oregon. “I was in shock, praying and trusting that everything would be okay,” she explained. The sight of her husband in the hospital was devastating; his injuries were extensive, including broken eye sockets, a shattered nose, and brain bleeds.

Despite his own suffering, Chris remained focused on his family during his recovery. “My concern was for them; I can’t imagine what they went through,” he said. This focus helped the family endure their challenges with the support of their community.

“I set goals for my recovery. I wanted to be discharged on specific days and regain my mobility as soon as possible,” he shared. Laurie added, “Every day, I thank God for the outcome, as it could have been so much worse.”

ZWierzynski plans to return to Mt. Hood once he fully heals. “I’ll likely hire a guide to ensure safety,” he stated with determination. Meanwhile, the family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with medical expenses as they navigate the aftermath of this traumatic event.
