Scorpions Stung by Firebirds, Suffer Defeat in Straight Sets
The Sedona Red Rock Scorpions faced a challenging match against the BASIS Phoenix Firebirds on September 18, ultimately losing in straight sets. This defeat brought the Scorpions’ season record to 4-1.
Senior Amy Brefeld set an early tone for the Scorpions with a powerful block, leading to a quick 4-0 advantage as the Firebirds struggled with errors. Yet, BASIS Phoenix quickly regrouped, tying the game at 4-4 and subsequently building a 10-6 lead.
Refusing to back down, the Scorpions rallied. Senior Sierra Williams executed decisive spikes, equalizing the score at 10 after capitalizing on another Firebirds’ error. Despite showing resilience, the Scorpions fell behind again as the Firebirds seized control, ultimately losing the first set 25-14 after a series of miscommunications.
In this match, the Scorpions experimented with a new rotation, incorporating junior Milana Ovcharenko into their lineup. Coach John Parks acknowledged the ongoing adjustments, stating, “I keep mixing things up…people need to step up and earn their spot.” It was clear that establishing a consistent rotation was proving difficult.
The second set started off poorly, with the Scorpions trailing 10-2. However, they clawed back, aided by the Firebirds’ mistakes. Senior Katrina Le led the charge with three aces, while Brefeld and Williams contributed crucial plays. Yet, just as the Scorpions seemed to regain momentum, the Firebirds orchestrated a five-point run, sealing the set at 25-15.
Coach Parks noted, “They got a hot server and we simply couldn’t pass the ball,” highlighting the Firebirds’ offensive prowess. The Scorpions struggled to keep pace in the final set, quickly finding themselves down 4-0, although junior Addie Moore ignited a brief comeback.
Despite a timeout that momentarily closed the gap to 12-9, the Firebirds again pulled ahead decisively, with a decisive run that ultimately clinched the match 25-14. This game showcased the Scorpions’ passing issues and mental lapses, which accounted for several misalignments on the court.
“We need to keep practicing good mechanics,” Parks said. “It takes time but we will get there.” The Scorpions will look to refine their skills in their next home game on September 25 at 6 p.m. against the Anthem Prep Eagles, who currently hold a 7-5 record.
