Scorpions Golf Team Tees Off for Thrilling 2025 Season

The Sedona Red Rock High School varsity golf team officially launched its 2025 season at Agave Highlands Golf Course in Cornville on February 25. The match featured teams from Chino Valley, Holbrook, and Camp Verde.
This year marks the second season for the team under the guidance of Head Coach Joseph Hazlitt.
“We’re looking a lot better this year thanks to our recruiting,” Hazlitt stated. “We have enough players this year to feel secure about the season. Last year was a challenge, as we struggled to meet the minimum number required to compete.”
Last season, the team fielded just five members. This year, returning players include Carter Pedersen, Lily Williams, Oliver Paydar, and Katrina Le.
“I want to establish a golf culture at the school, generate excitement, and attract more students to the sport,” Hazlitt added. “Golf is unique; it’s a lifelong sport, unlike many high school activities that you can’t pursue after graduation. That’s a vital lesson I want to share with these kids.”
For junior Glenna Barnes, a first-time golfer, the appeal of golf lies in its calming nature. “It’s such a relaxing sport,” she expressed. “I want to learn and improve my skills.”
Pedersen shared his summer plans post-graduation, aiming to work in Alaska as a commercial fisherman. He acknowledged a disappointing start to the season yet remains focused on enjoyment and improvement. “I’ve played almost every week since last year and have seen progress in my overall game,” he remarked.
Hazlitt highlighted senior Katrina Le as an experienced player who balances her academic workload with her athletic commitments. “Her busy schedule sometimes limits her availability, but she’s highly talented,” he noted.
Katrina Le described feeling rejuvenated for the golf season, stating, “My post-grad plans include Northern Arizona University, where I hope to join their honors program and study business.”
The team welcomes freshmen Leonard Vandermast and Carden Le, both first-generation golfers motivated by parental support.
Lily Williams took pride in her improvement, lowering her score from 85 to 52 for nine holes over the last two years, with aspirations to reduce her score into the 40s this season. “Focused practice on my putting will help me achieve that goal,” she suggested. “While others might hit the ball farther, my accuracy gives me an edge.”
“We’re all about enjoying the game and hopefully improving along the way,” Hazlitt emphasized. He also encouraged any latecomers to join the team before spring break. “Anyone interested is welcome to come aboard,” he added.
The Scorpions will host their first at-home tournament on March 5 at Oak Creek Country Club, competing against Chino Valley and Camp Verde, starting at 2:30 p.m.
