Scorpions take first loss to Lions in spirited match

The Sedona Red Rock High School volleyball team faced a challenging matchup against the North Valley Christian Lions on Wednesday, September 4, ultimately losing in straight sets.

The first set proved difficult for the Scorpions, who fell behind quickly at 11-2. Early communication issues contributed to their struggles, allowing the Lions to capitalize on crucial points. Following a timeout called by Head Coach John Parks at 12-2, the Scorpions managed to score two points due to Lions’ errors, bringing the score to 13-4. However, a comeback was unlikely as North Valley Christian surged ahead, sealing the first set at 25-5 despite a strong spike from senior Amy Brefeld.

“We didn’t play well,” remarked Parks. He noted that the team’s height disadvantage was increasingly problematic against larger opponents running quick sets. However, he emphasized the need for improved teamwork, which he felt was lacking during the match.

Following a pep talk, the Scorpions returned to the court for the second set with renewed energy. Despite losing the first three points, they rallied to take their first lead at 4-3. This momentum was short-lived, as the Lions regained control and led 10-7. Another timeout appeared beneficial, as Sedona surged back into the lead at 11-10 with contributions from senior Sierra Williams and junior Addi Moore, along with an error from the Lions. Moore then added two aces, bringing the score to 15-12.

Both teams ramped up the intensity, culminating in a tie at 17. After a double-touch penalty against Sedona, the Lions regained the edge at 18-17. A subsequent timeout did little to halt the Lions’ momentum, as the Scorpions lost the next six points, ultimately falling 25-18.

Senior player Katrina Le reflected on the second set’s outcome, attributing the loss to nerves and a tendency to overthink their plays. “When we’re all serious, we are too tense and nervous,” she stated.

The third set began promisingly for the Scorpions, who led 5-2 thanks to errors by the Lions and strong plays by Williams and freshman Xitlalic Herrera Juarez. However, the Lions quickly reversed the tide, taking a 6-5 lead and extending their advantage to 10-7.

Despite another timeout called by Parks, the Scorpions struggled to regain footing. The Lions went on a scoring spree, pushing the lead to 17-7. Although Sedona fought hard to return, they lost the third set 25-11, concluding the match.

Parks commented on the team’s performance, noting that they played too individually instead of sticking to their game plan. “Our teamwork has to be spot on every single time for us to hang with teams that can hit the ball effectively,” he emphasized.

The Scorpions’ next home game, originally scheduled for September 12, has been rescheduled to September 18 at 5 p.m., where they will face the BASIS Phoenix Firebirds.
