Scorpions Dominate Wildcats in Thrilling Season Opener
The Sedona Red Rock High School Scorpions girls’ volleyball team showcased impressive skills in their season opener, defeating the Mayer Wildcats 3-0 on August 28.
Despite senior captain Amy Brefeld sitting out most of the first set due to illness, junior Addie Moore stepped up with outstanding serving performances. Head coach John Parks noted this challenge affected the planned rotation but emphasized how the team adapted.
Junior Kelley Arias filled in seamlessly for Brefeld, demonstrating poise and consistency. Parks praised her performance, stating, “Kelley did a great job stepping in and just staying calm. She always does that.”
The Scorpions quickly gained momentum, winning the first set decisively at 25-14. However, nerves appeared to hinder their performance as they trailed 2-5 early in the second. Senior Katrina Le expressed the team’s initial struggle with nerves but credited a pep talk for helping them regain focus.
Once the Scorpions gained their composure, a six-point run turned the score in their favor at 8-5. Although the Wildcats momentarily rallied to go up 14-12, Brefeld’s return to the court was pivotal. The co-captains, Brefeld and Sierra Williams, worked effectively together to counter the Wildcats’ offense.
A four-point surge led by Brefeld and Williams pushed the Scorpions ahead 20-18. They ultimately secured the second set 25-22, with Moore sealing the set with a powerful spike. Parks commented on the significance of reducing unforced errors and establishing a rhythm during this crucial phase of the match.
The Scorpions took control in the third set, initially leading 6-4 before executing a remarkable eight-point streak, stretching the score to 17-6. Although the Wildcats managed a small comeback, the Scorpions held strong and secured the final three points. Le concluded the match with an ace, finalizing the score at 3-0.
Parks reflected on the match, acknowledging the team’s overzealous energy but commending their strong finish. He highlighted not only Arias’s impressive substitution but also the contributions of freshman Xitlalic and sophomore Natalie, marking their successful debuts.
