Scorpions Dominate Phantoms 7-0 in Intense Senior Night Showdown

The Sedona Red Rock High School varsity soccer team faced off against the Grand Canyon Phantoms on October 22, marking an important milestone as it was their senior night and the final game of the regular season.
With playoff hopes on the line, the Scorpions aimed to finish strong at home. Throughout the match, the Sedona players exhibited determination and skill, creating numerous opportunities despite an initially sluggish start.
The game began with the Scorpions controlling possession. However, early exchanges saw both teams struggle offensively. A foul by Sedona’s senior Jorge Luna Landaverde granted the Phantoms a free kick, but they were unable to capitalize, leading to another turnover.
As the first half progressed, Sedona’s defense shined. Assistant coach Juan Carlos Aguilar highlighted that players like Ramon Betancourt and Owen Didier Garcia Jiminez were pivotal in maintaining a solid defensive line and generating offensive plays.
Continuing to press, the Scorpions finally broke through. Freshman Javier Ruiz Olvera scored the first goal with just over 12 minutes remaining in the half. The momentum shifted dramatically, as sophomore Yoiner Agudelo Esparza soon followed with a second goal, and senior Alexis Flores capped the half with a chip-in, sending the teams into halftime with the Scorpions ahead 3-0.
Head Coach Gavin Shippen reflected on the team’s performance, noting areas needing improvement while recognizing their solid defensive play. He acknowledged the challenge posed by a recent break from practice and stressed the need for better ball control and passing.
The second half started with both teams exchanging attacks, yet the Scorpions soon demonstrated their scoring prowess again. Israel Montanez extended the lead to 4-0, followed by a quick fifth goal from Betancourt, who had been eager to score all night.
With the game showing signs of de-escalating, Sedona’s intensity remained high. Senior Owen Didier Garcia Jiminez delivered a stunning sixth goal. Aguilar praised Jimenez for his comprehensive play and relentless spirit throughout the match.
Jorge Luna Landaverde sealed the game with a final goal, bringing the score to 7-0. Shippen commented positively on the second half and the team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of passing and continued development.
Despite the celebratory night, some players expressed a bittersweet sentiment concerning the season’s conclusion. Betancourt noted the disparity in games played compared to their competitors, but he remained proud of the senior class’s contributions this season.
