Holiday weekend heat and isolated storms

Weekend storms are poised to bring significant weather changes, especially across the high desert areas of Arizona. Some of these storms may extend into the valley region as well.

PHOENIX — As the holiday weekend unfolds, Phoenix marks its 96th consecutive day of high temperatures reaching at least 100 degrees. Saturday’s forecast indicates valley highs approaching 108 degrees, while higher elevations such as Flagstaff could see temperatures near 80 degrees accompanied by isolated storms.

Though storm activity is predicted to be concentrated in high desert regions, the possibility of isolated storms in lower desert areas, including the valley, remains. These storms, if they develop, are expected to occur post 4:00 p.m., with heightened risks of gusty winds and blowing dust.

A high-pressure system is expected to dominate the region, ushering in drier and hotter conditions as the week progresses. Projections suggest that Phoenix may experience additional days exceeding the 110-degree threshold. So far this year, the city has registered 110-degree days 54 times, just shy of last year’s record.

The seven-day forecast is as follows:

SATURDAY: 108/85 Mostly Sunny with possible afternoon isolated storms and blowing dust.

SUNDAY: 109/83 Mostly Sunny with possible afternoon isolated storms and blowing dust.

TUESDAY: 110/86 Sunny and hotter.

WEDNESDAY: 112/86 Sunny and hotter.

THURSDAY: 114/87 Sunny and hotter.

FRIDAY: 113/89 Sunny and steamy.

The Monsoon Meter for Saturday indicates a level of 4 for the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains.
