Congressman David Schweikert addressed the latest job numbers released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which reported an addition of 256,000 jobs in December under outgoing President Joe Biden. Schweikert, serving as the Vice Chairman of the Joint Economic Committee, highlighted the significance of this data as the administration transitions.

“While the December data indicates strong employment growth, reaching 2.2 million new jobs in 2024, it also exposes ongoing challenges that require immediate action,” Schweikert emphasized.

He pointed out that American families have endured severe economic pressures, with inflation consistently outpacing wage growth for more than four years. Schweikert noted, “The Biden administration’s policies, characterized by excessive spending and strict regulations, have imposed hardships on small businesses and stifled innovation.” He urged that while there are temporary gains in some subsidized sectors, the broader economy remains unstable.

The Joint Economic Committee Republicans summarized the situation in a post to X, stating, “In December, employment rose by 256K, with an average monthly gain of 186K in 2024. Yet, challenges persist, including an unemployment rate above 4% for the past eight months and a historically low labor force participation rate.”

During his remarks, Schweikert stressed the need for policies that promote economic growth and restore market confidence. “Reducing government overreach and emphasizing fiscal responsibility are critical for revitalizing American prosperity,” he stated.

Additionally, Representative Jodey Arrington, Chairman of the House Budget Committee, voiced concerns about the accuracy of job statistics, noting that revisions to BLS data have previously led to significant downward adjustments. In August 2024, a downward revision of approximately 818,000 jobs created from March 2023 to March 2024 emerged, drawing scrutiny of the Biden administration’s economic claims.

Amidst accusations of manipulated job numbers, President-elect Donald Trump criticized the administration, labeling the situation a “scandal.” He commented, “The Harris-Biden Administration has been caught fraudulently manipulating job statistics to hide the true extent of the economic ruin they have inflicted on America.”

Schweikert’s office underscored several takeaways from the BLS report, positioning the Biden administration’s legacy as one marked by:

  • Real wages not keeping pace with inflation, leading to unprecedented credit card debt burdens for many families.
  • A labor force participation rate that remains below pre-pandemic levels, sidelining many Americans from economic opportunities.
  • A failure to adequately address workforce development, resulting in crucial labor shortages in manufacturing and construction industries.

As economic concerns loom large, Schweikert expressed his commitment to enacting solutions that foster growth and opportunity for all Americans.
