Sand Stone Fire burns 27,390 acres northeast of Fountain Hills, 78% contained

The Sand Stone Fire, which ignited on July 25, has now been 78% contained, authorities reported. Fire crews continue to battle the flames 14 miles northeast of Fountain Hills in Rio Verde, Arizona.

The blaze has scorched approximately 27,390 acres as of August 3. An Emergency Closure Order was issued for the Cave Creek and Mesa Ranger District in the Tonto National Forest to safeguard public health and safety amidst the uncontrolled fire and ongoing firefighting operations. The Tonto National Forest agency confirmed the measure.

The Sunflower community, which was under ‘SET’ status, has reverted to ‘READY’ status. Though highly visible, officials assure that there is no immediate threat to the areas of Rio Verde, Fort McDowell, and Fountain Hills.

Firefighters have been using masticators to chip and shred vegetation to mitigate the fire’s fuel near Forest Road 201 by the Mount Peeley Trailhead, Old Highway 87, and the Mesquite Wash. The Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team is also working on emergency stabilization of the affected zones.

Meanwhile, SR 87 southbound remains closed from SR 188 to Bush Highway, with no estimate on reopening.

Residents in wildfire-prone areas are strongly advised to prepare an emergency supply kit. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends a kit with essentials such as three gallons of water per person, a three-day supply of ready-to-eat food, first-aid supplies, prescription medications, and important documents stored in a waterproof container. Additional items like warm blankets, radios, dust masks, and clothing are also necessary.
