Saguaro Lake boating community in disbelief after possible carbon monoxide poisoning kills 3 people

MESA, Ariz. — A tragic incident unfolded over the weekend, as authorities discovered the bodies of two women and one man in a houseboat on Saguaro Lake. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) received a call Saturday regarding the group, which had not been seen or heard from for some time.

Upon arrival, deputies noted that a generator was running on the boat. “The presence of carbon monoxide was prevalent when we got on scene,” stated MCSO Sgt. Calbert Gillett. Details about the air quality and precise carbon monoxide levels have not yet been disclosed.

Local boaters expressed their shock and sorrow regarding the incident. Jack Wolf, a resident of the marina, remarked, “It’s just sad, you know, when something like that happens.” He emphasized the common knowledge among boaters that operating a generator inside an enclosed space poses significant risks.

Wolf noted that many boat owners connect to shore power to avoid the hazards associated with generators. “We get shore power,” he added, underscoring a safer alternative for heating cabins during winter.

As the investigation continues, officials have not confirmed whether the houseboat was equipped with functioning carbon monoxide detectors. Wolf mentioned that if an alarm had sounded, it would have been audible from outside the boat, suggesting the presence of additional safety failures.

The identities of the deceased remain undisclosed, pending notification of next of kin. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an investigation to establish the cause of death in this unfortunate case.
