Rotary Aims for $105K Boost for Sedona-Oak Creek School District

The Rotary Club of Sedona has initiated its largest fundraising campaign in 68 years, aiming to raise $105,000. The funds will support the Sedona-Oak Creek School District in hiring a community education director for the Wildcat Extended Day Program at West Sedona School.
Superintendent Tom Swaninger emphasized the program’s importance, stating, “It provides a safe space for kids before and after school, a vital resource for working parents.” The envisioned director will enhance the program by incorporating tutoring, enrichment activities, and clubs. “The goal is to create an enriching environment that ties into their school learning,” he added.
The funds raised will cover the new director’s salary and benefits while expanding the existing before- and after-school service. Currently, the program assists between 50 and 80 students daily, especially thriving on early-release Wednesdays. Swaninger confirmed that the district will finance the program independently of the Rotary’s contributions, describing their support as beneficial but not essential. The job listing for the director has already been posted with candidates undergoing interviews.
As for future costs, Swaninger noted that increased expenses for equipment and field trips are anticipated once the new director is appointed, although he refrained from providing specific financial estimates at this time.
Jean Barton, President of the Rotary Club of Sedona Charitable Fund, explained the initiative aligns with their mission of supporting working families. “Childcare is a pressing issue,” she noted. “The extended day program is designed to alleviate some of these challenges by keeping children engaged while their parents work.” Barton has also begun volunteering with the program, emphasizing the need for adult supervision to address social issues early on.
A significant boost to the campaign has come from a $25,000 grant from the Arizona Community Foundation, presented by regional advisor Chelsea Burk-Lielich. This grant was announced during the club’s kickoff event on March 4. To further incentivize local donations, club members will match contributions dollar for dollar, up to $25,000.
Community participation is encouraged. Donations can be made on the Rotary Club’s website or by mailing checks to their Charitable Fund. For more information, potential donors can visit the website or contact Barton directly.
