Rockafellow plans launch party for Tucson Council campaign; Dahl at DGT

A series of political events is set to take place in Tucson, highlighting the active electoral landscape ahead of key elections. Notably, Leighton Rockafellow Jr., a Democratic candidate for the Ward 6 Council seat, will host his campaign launch party on Friday, April 18, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Himmel Park, located at 1000 N. Tucson Blvd. This marks his inaugural foray into politics as he seeks to bring a legal perspective to the City Council.

“Tucson needs a legal mind that can challenge the status quo and offer a fresh perspective,” Rockafellow stated. He firmly believes he can meet the diverse needs of constituents, drawing from his experience as an attorney. Rockafellow faces three other Democrats in the Aug. 5 primary: community radio administrator Miranda Schubert, Pima Community College Governing Board member Theresa Riel, and retired science teacher Jim Sinex. The victor of this primary will subsequently challenge Republican Jay Toltoff in the general election on November 4.

In other political happenings, the Democrats of Greater Tucson will hold a happy hour on Wednesday, April 16, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Brother John’s Beer, Bourbon and BBQ. This gathering aims to foster community engagement among local Democratic supporters.

Later in the week, Tucson Sentinel reporter Natalie Robbins will join a panel discussion on AZPM’s Press Room, airing Friday at 8:30 p.m. This discussion will cover major news stories impacting the region.

On Monday, April 21, current Tucson City Councilman Kevin Dahl, running for his second term in Ward 3, will address members of the Democrats of Greater Tucson via Zoom at noon, emphasizing his bid for re-election. His opponent, Sadie Shaw, will host her campaign launch party on Saturday, April 26, at Doris J. Thompson Park from 5 to 7 p.m.

Moreover, there are critical deadlines approaching for voters in the lead-up to various elections. Voter registration for the CD7 special election closes on June 16, with early voting beginning June 18. The Tucson City Council primary election is scheduled for July 8, with early voting set to commence the following day. Key dates to note include the primary election for the CD7 special election on July 15 and the Tucson City Council primary on August 5. General elections follow in September and November.
