Cave Creek residents Mike and Pat Markham will showcase their artistry in the Holland Center’s “Amazing Artists” series on April 14. As experienced ceramic and sculptural artists, they will discuss the profound impact of art on their lives and the evolution of their creative processes.

Mike Markham, whose focus is on decorative and functional sculpture, began his artistic journey after earning his MA and MFA degrees in art education and three-dimensional design from Arizona State University. His diverse background includes roles as a high school art teacher, university instructor, and custom furniture designer. His sculptures are made using various materials such as metal, wood, glass, acrylic, and ceramic. He reflects, “Throughout my career as a contemporary sculptor, my work has evolved from carving wood and metal casting to multimedia constructions and minimalist functional art.”

Pat Markham discovered pottery while teaching elementary school, attending night classes to fuel her passion. Now a skilled potter, she creates both functional and decorative pieces. Her artistic approach transforms clay from a malleable state into solid, colorful works that bring her joy. She shares, “Using clay as my medium and a potter’s wheel as my vehicle, I find pleasure in the transformation and a sense of peace and serenity.”

Collaboration is key for Pat and Mike, as they often work together on various projects. Since 2007, they have participated in Hidden in the Hills events and contributed bowls for the Empty Bowls project throughout the valley. They also teach pottery classes for the Terravita Art League, nurturing the next generation of artists.

Art enthusiasts are invited to join the Markhams at the Holland Center from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on April 14. Future columns will explore the interplay between right and left brain processes and feature more outstanding artists from Cave Creek and Carefree who contribute to the community. Remember, “You Gotta Have Art!”
